“I’m just Mary, just Mary, just Mary, I’m just Mary, just Mary, just Marrrrry!”…Ahhh Mary J Blige! I love, love this woman and her music! In my opinion, she is one of the realest musicians out there. I’ve always listened to Mary J but I find myself appreciating her music more and more the older I get. Her music is not just ordinary music. It’s not there just for you to have something to bop your head to. Mary’s music speaks to you. Speaks to your soul. You can tell how even to her, the songs she writes and sings are not just songs. She lives her life through her music. She tells the story of her life through her music. If you follow all her albums, you can see the evolution of Mary to the woman she is today. The things she sings about make you realise that you are ok. That whatever you go through is not peculiar to you. That all your experiences are human experiences and we all go through more or less the same things.
I love the way she is so expressive in her music. You get to feel exactly what she was feeling when she was writing and singing her songs. Her music speaks to me y’all. All her ups and downs. Her struggles and her victories. It all comes through. Below are a few (a few!) of my favourite Mary J songs and a brief explanation on why I love that particular song. Enjoy!
No More Drama
No more drama. I laugh now but it didn’t seem funny at the time. This song helped me get through a break up some years back. It was just one those toxic relationships with baby momma’s and all sorts involved. I walked into that situation knowing there was bound to be drama but I was young and silly and thought I was the ish lol. But that same situation also helped me to grow and mature. I now have zero interest in any relationships that bring drama to my life.
I can love you
We’ve all had that person we wanted but couldn’t have because they were taken. There you’ll be thinking “I can love you beeeetter than she can…” Lol.
This song! I think this song is just a musical genius;
Until the rainbow burns the stars out of the sky
Until the ocean covers every mountain high
Until the dolphins fly and parrots live at sea
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream
Those lyrics just take to me to my romantic-day-dreaming place. Imagine your husband singing this to you on your wedding day? Maaan!
Rainy days. Who hasn’t had these in life? I’ve had some really rainy days where I couldn’t wait for the sun to shine again. But you know what? It will never rain forever. The sun will always, always come out and shine again 🙂
I’m searching for the real love
Someone to set my heart free
I’m searching for a real love…..
So I try my best and pray to God
He’d send me someone real
To caress me and to guide me
Towards a love my heart can feel
Now I know I can be faithful
I can be your all and all
And give you good lovin’ through the summertime
Winter, spring and fall
Self explanatory right?
MJB Da MVP
This is one of my favourites. I love the way she is singing about all her albums and the space she was in during each album. All through it all she the the MVP of her life. Makes me think of all the things that I have been through. Maybe not a drastic as Mary but still, I am and always will be the Most Valuable Player of my own life.
Love love this song. I’d actually like to post all the lyrics to this song but that would make this post waaay too long. You can check them out here
And you’ll be at peace with yourself
You won’t really need no one else
Except for the man up above
Because He’ll give you love
We always like to think we’re experts on other people’s lives. We have no clue what they’ve been through or what they are going through. We don’t know why they are the way they are. Let’s always take a moment to try and understand a person and their life before we put them in a box.
This one doesn’t really resonate with me per se. I just like it because of how open she is about the struggles she goes through as a celebrity. It’s hard for her to tell who are her genuine friends and who is there just for a free ride. She just wants people to see her as plain old Mary.
I know this is a love song but for some strange reason, I’ve always thought this is something I would sing to my child/children. At least the first verse anyway. My beautiful ones.
Well, this one I just like the video lol. And it also reminds me of my undergrad days at uni 🙂
Ok. Let me stop there because I could go on and on and post another ten songs!
